Jiuzhaigou & Huanglong Travel Guide: Preventing Altitude Sickness

Altitudes of Jiuzhaigou and Huanglong, NHS advice on altitude sickness and practical tips for visiting northern Sichuan, with sources and check date.

Jiuzhaigou Valley and the Huanglong Scenic and Historic Interest Area sit in northern Sichuan, famous for turquoise lakes, waterfalls and colourful travertine pools. They are also high-altitude destinations, so a little preparation makes the trip far more comfortable. This guide explains how the two areas differ in height, what the NHS advises about altitude sickness, and how to pace your days.

1. Jiuzhaigou and Huanglong: what the altitudes look like

The two areas are not at the same height. Reference figures from public sources (Wikipedia, read on 07/10/2026):

  • Jiuzhaigou: the valley lies on the edge of the Tibetan Plateau and its elevation ranges from about 2,000 m at the mouth of Shuzheng Gully to over 4,500 m on the highest peaks. Visitors stay on the lower valley floors: Arrow Bamboo Lake is at about 2,618 m and Long Lake, the highest lake, at about 3,150 m. Above 3,500 m the climate is colder and drier.
  • Huanglong: the area spans roughly 1,700 m to 5,588 m (the Xuebaoding peak). The travertine ponds lie in Huanglong Valley, a stretch of about 3.6 km. The road between Jiuhuang Airport and the valley crosses Xueshan Ridge at about 4,007 m, the highest point on that route.

The NHS notes that altitude sickness can occur from around 2,500 m, especially when you climb quickly. Both places are therefore worth planning for, and Huanglong deserves the most care.

2. Altitude sickness: what the NHS advises

The points below summarise the NHS guidance on altitude sickness (page last reviewed 31 July 2023). They are general information, not personal medical advice, so consult your doctor or a travel clinic before you go, especially if you have heart or lung conditions or have had altitude sickness before.

Symptoms

Symptoms usually start 6 to 10 hours after reaching altitude: headache, loss of appetite, feeling sick, tiredness, dizziness and difficulty sleeping.

If you feel unwell

  • Tell your travel companions and rest at the same altitude until you feel better; do not go higher while you have symptoms.
  • Symptoms usually improve within 1 to 3 days. If they get worse or do not improve after a day, go to a lower altitude if you can.
  • Get medical help immediately if you feel very unwell, are confused, have balance problems, are breathless at rest, or have blue or grey lips or skin.

Reducing your risk

  • Go up slowly and, if possible, spend a few days below 2,500 m before going higher.
  • At 3,000 m or more, plan a rest day at the same altitude every 3 to 4 days.
  • Drink enough water to avoid dehydration, and do not drink alcohol while travelling at altitude.
  • Avoid going from below 1,200 m to above 3,500 m in a single day.

3. Pacing your days in Huanglong

Because the valley is high, take it slowly: walk at an easy pace, pause often, and keep water with you. Wikipedia describes the main water course as running from the Buddhist temple at the top of the valley down to the Guests Welcome Pond, so it is worth asking your guide on the day which direction and transport options are currently in use, as these can change. If you feel symptoms, follow the NHS advice above rather than pushing on.

4. Getting around Jiuzhaigou

Jiuzhaigou is made of three valleys arranged in a Y shape: Rize and Zechawa flow from the south and meet at the centre to form Shuzheng Valley, which runs north to the entrance. According to Wikipedia, most visitors take the shuttle bus to the end of Rize or Shuzheng gully and then walk back downhill on the boardwalks, using the bus when the next site is too far. Highlights named in the sources include Arrow Bamboo Lake, Panda Lake, Five-Flower Lake, Pearl Shoal and its waterfall (about 310 m wide), Nuorilang Falls and Long Lake. For a day-by-day plan, see our Jiuzhaigou 6-day itinerary guide.

5. Practical notes before you book

  • Visitor limits: Wikipedia reports a limit of 41,000 daily visitors enforced through timed tickets, so tickets are best arranged in advance.
  • After the 2017 earthquake: a magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck in August 2017; the valley closed until 3 March 2018 and reopened with limited access, so some sites may be restricted.
  • Check before you travel: altitude figures, access and park rules can change. Check the official announcements of the scenic areas before departure (information read on 07/10/2026).
